3 Sep - Tim Burton has finally explained the reason why Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis are not in the sequel to his hit 1988 film, "Beetlejuice".

The filmmaker, who was asked about the absence of the two stars from "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice", stated that he doesn't want to just "tick any boxes" when it comes to the sequel.

"So even though they were such an amazing integral part of the first one, I was focusing on something else," he said.

In the original flick, Baldwin and Davis played Adam and Barbara Maitland, the original owners of the house later bought by the Deetz family who find themselves haunting their own home.

Instead of their return, the new movie introduces new characters that include the new Burton girl, Jenna Ortega, who plays Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz daughter, Astrid.

"A sequel like this, it really had to do with the time. That was my hook into it, the three generations of mother, daughter, granddaughter. And that [would] be the nucleus of it. I couldn't have made this personally back in 1989 or whatever," he said.

Earlier in April, Geena Davis told the media that the reason she wasn't called to return might be due to the fact that ghosts shouldn't be able to "age".
