Gaza flotilla documentary "Al Awda" to screen in Kuala Lumpur on 5 Dec

3 Dec - Singaporean filmmaker Jason Soo's "Al Awda," which documented the 2018 Gaza flotilla, is set to premiere in Malaysia on 5 December.

The film, which was screened last year at the Singapore International Film Festival, will be screened at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) in Empire Damansara.

The documentary, which featured footages from the boat, follows 22 activists aboard the Al Awda (The Return) flotilla as they attempt to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza in 2018. Among the members aside from Soo include Malaysian academic Afandi Salleh and Singaporean exile Dr Ang Swee Chai.

It also features the preparations, meetings, and training that the team went through prior to their confrontation with the Israeli navy.

Following the screening, a panel discussion titled "From Flotillas to Boycotts: Taking Action for Palestine," will also be held. In addition to Soo, the panel will also include Puan Sri Norma Hashim (Viva Palestine Malaysia), Nazari Ismail (BDS Malaysia), Palestinian educator Baha Hilo, and Xiang Xiang of GEGAR.

The documentary will also be screened at the "Palestine in Focus: Stories from the Land" festival in Penang on 6 December.
