"The Smashing Machine" earns The Rock his first Golden Globes nomination
10 Dec - Elated to be nominated for the first time at the Golden Globes, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson believes that the nomination is more than just a form of recognition.

The actor, who is nominated in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in the Drama category for his portrayal of MMA fighter Mark Kerr in "The Smashing Machine", said that it represents the fight in everybody especially those with addictions and demon that they have to fight off every day.

"Mark Kerr had it all and lost everything, and has since become sober. He did overdose twice. Life is good because he's sober and because he made it. And not everyone is that lucky," he said.

Johnson added, "That's the movie that we wanted to make: a nod to those who fight."

He revealed that he has lost 15 friends from addiction, either from overdose or suicide.

"Life was too hard. It shook me, and then it restabilised me in a way like, 'Okay, I'm so happy we made this film.' It is a love letter to those that I just talked to you about. That's why this nomination means so much," he expressed.

The actor, who was lauded for his performance in the movie when it was released earlier, will be competing with the likes of Joel Edgerton ("Train Dreams"), Oscar Isaac ("Frankenstein"), Michael B. Jordan ("Sinners"), Wagner Moura ("The Secret Agent") and Jeremy Allen White ("Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere").
