FDAM demands answers after director's name removed from "Misteri Fraser 1910"

14 May - The Film Directors' Association Malaysia (FDAM) has called on the producers of the film "Misteri Fraser 1910" to explain the removal of the original director, Shuhaimi Zulkefli's name from all official promotional materials, including the movie poster.

FDAM Chairman, Datuk Afdlin Shauki, described the move as unprofessional and a violation of industry ethics, especially considering the film was supported by FINAS' FAME fund.

"FDAM views this matter seriously as Shuhaimi was the officially appointed director from the early stages of the film's development, including during pre-production and filming," said Afdlin. "Yet when the final product was released, his name was completely omitted from posters and all promotional materials. This is not only an insult but also a blow to the morale of filmmakers."

He also revealed that Shuhaimi was barred from participating in the post-production process and was allegedly linked to public statements that led to legal threats and a RM1 million compensation claim from the producers.

"The relationship between a director and a producer should be built on mutual respect and clear contracts, not oppressive actions when disagreements arise. We cannot allow practices like this to become normalised, especially for productions funded by the government," he added.

FDAM is also urging FINAS to act swiftly to protect the rights of local creatives, particularly concerning issues of recognition and the credibility of directors.

"We don't want this to become a precedent. If such practices go unchecked, the industry risks losing good directors who no longer trust the system," Afdlin said.

Back in March, the producers, Millionaire Films Production demanded Shuhaimi make a public apology, alleging that the director made a defamatory statement on his social media account that they had not paid the crew's salaries and causing the film to be blocked from screening.
