"Gayong" celebrates Malaysia's martial arts heritage on the big screen

2 May - While the Malaysian film industry buzzes with new releases, Sol Pictures has unveiled a historical epic titled "Gayong."

Inspired by Mahaguru Allahyarham Datuk Meor Abdul Rahman (ADMAR), founder of the Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia (PSSGM), "Gayong" stands as one of this year's most anticipated films.

Director Faisal Ishak explained that "Gayong" transcends being just an action film - it's a platform to elevate Malay heritage to the silver screen. The challenges weren't merely technical but centered on ensuring authenticity toward ADMAR's legacy.

"The late ADMAR wasn't only a warrior but a teacher who brought deep philosophy about martial arts and life. I needed to ensure the storyline captures his spirit, struggle, and sacrifices in championing silat Gayong," Faisal shared at the film's gala premiere at GSC Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, on Tuesday.

"I didn't face directing problems because the cast and I grew close during filming sessions. I always believe a script becomes sincere when everyone works together without compromise."

For authentic fight sequences, Faisal recruited international supporting actors - Mixed Martial Arts athletes Shannon Wiratchai from Thailand and actor Hiromitsu Takeda from Japan.

Producer Eric Ong believes it's time filmmakers bring national figures to the silver screen. "Why feature other people's heroes? We have our own. I want to promote Malay culture and heritage through this film. I'm ethnic Chinese producing a Malay hero's story because this transcends race. If I can praise Malay heroes, why can't you?"

Sol Pictures has already completed filming for "Gayong 2," now in post-production. Executive Producer Khairul Anuar Latip said, "I ask everyone to promote and support 'Gayong' so 'Gayong 2' can be realized even more brilliantly."

The film features a stellar cast including Beto Kusyairy, Nabila Huda, Syafie Naswip, Wan Raja, Anas Ridzuan, Shah Kimin, Eric Chen, and Indonesian actor Yayan Ruhian.

"Gayong" releases nationwide starting 8 May.
