Award-winning "Jagat" re-releases for 10th anniversary

"Jagat" won Best Film at the 2016 Malaysian Film Festival
16 Apr - The groundbreaking Malaysian film "Jagat" by director Sun-J Perumal is making a welcome return to theatres for its 10th anniversary on 23 May 2025

The original "Jagat" (2015) introduced audiences to Appoy, a spirited kid who would rather watch gangster flicks and make prank calls than memorise his multiplication tables. Desperately trying to keep his son on the straight path, Appoy's hard-working father becomes increasingly abusive as the boy is inexorably drawn to the criminal lifestyle of his uncle, a henchman for a local gang.

What makes this re-release particularly exciting is the simultaneous premiere of two companion films that explore alternate paths for Appoy's character:

  • "Macai" - A crime drama depicting the darker outcome if Appoy fully embraced the criminal world and descends into the world of drugs and crime. It premieres on 24 July 2025.

  • "Neer Mel Neruppu" (Fire on Water) - A satirical romantic drama showing Appoy's life had he chosen education and eventually become a filmmaker. It premieres on 18 September 2025.
Together, these three films present a powerful trilogy as the two sequels explore alternate realities, shedding light on how a single choice can ripple into vastly different lives.

The production history of "Jagat" is remarkable in itself. Set in Malaysia of the 1990s, the film is both a brutal genre cinema and a bitter social report showing the silenced part of the country's history and the fate of the Tamil minority, pushed to the margins and excluded from the dynamically developing society.

The film faced funding challenges due to its unflinching subject matter and was cast largely with non-professional actors, including finding its lead in a Malaysian orphanage.

The majority of characters in the film speak Tamil - that is why "Jagat" was initially excluded from the award race at Malaysia Film Festival, raising a lot of controversy. It led to the change in competition rules and abolishing the previous language limits, allowing productions in all minority languages to compete for the awards.

"Jagat" made history when it won Best Film at the 2016 Malaysian Film Festival - a landmark achievement as the first non-Malay language film to claim this honor in the festival's 28-year history.
