20 Jan - In the wake of the destructive wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles, horror master Stephen King is voicing a strong opinion that the 2025 Academy Awards shouldn't happen at all this year.

Known for his iconic works like "Misery," King stressed his belief in a post on the platform Bluesky, where he announced his decision not to participate in voting for the Oscars. He stressed that the glitzy event feels out of place given the current crisis.

King's post stirred a lively debate, with some fans disagreeing and offering their thoughts on why the Oscars should continue as a celebration of art.

On 17 January, King posted, "I hear what you guys are saying about the Oscars, and how they're a celebration of life, and the show must go on, blah-blah-blah, so-on-and-so-forth. It all makes a degree of sense, but to me it still feels like Nero fiddling while Rome burns. Or in this case, wearing fancy clothes while LA burns," he added.

Actress Jean Smart, known for her sharp wit, expressed similar views. She suggested that instead of throwing a lavish party, the Oscars could use their platform to help out by donating their profits to support those impacted by the wildfires and the brave firefighters fighting against them.

For now, the Oscars ceremony is still scheduled to take place on 2 March, and the debate about whether or not to celebrate Hollywood's biggest night continues.
