"Syurga Dalam Botol" breaks Sabah film records
21 Oct - Ebi Kornelis is elated that his movie, "Syurga Dalam Botol" has now made more than RM1.2 million at the domestic box office.

The Akademi Fantasia alum, who made his directorial debut through the movie, said that it was a great achievement for him, especially since it was usually hard for a movie from Sabah to gain public attention.

"Actually, the movie had already achieved RM1 million in its ninth day. As a director, I never thought to see such a thing. In the past, the most that a movie from Sabah made was RM200,000 and even that took five weeks to get," he said.

The film, which cost RM 1.4 million, also received RM500,000 from the First Time Amateur Filmmaker Fund (FAME) through the Digital Content Fund (DKD) under the Ministry of Communication, provided by FINAS.

Ebi said that he made the film without any real target, and that his hope was that the movie can exceed RM500,000 that was funded.

"Many people can't believe that this film was made with a small budget. All aspects including the songs were carefully arranged, including the colour grading," he said.

The film, which tells the story of children who have no citizenship, co-stars Kenneth Torrecampo Oliver, Dg Hasnah, Sharizan Tahir, Quzhairil Lona Walawd, Selhan Ramon and Abdul Kams Sainali.

Prior to "Syurga Dalam Botol", the highest grossing Sabahan movie was the Dusun-language film, "Sinakagon", which made RM225,859 at the box office.
