"Jana Nayagan" postpones release amid censor battle

8 Jan - Amid the censorship battle with India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the team of Vijay's final movie, "Jana Nayagan" announced that the film had to be postponed to a later date.

In an official announcement released on 7 January, KVN Productions expressed, "It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan, eagerly awaited on 9 January, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control."

"We deeply understand the anticipation, excitement, and emotions surrounding this film, and this decision has not been an easy one for any of us. The new release date will be announced at the earliest. Until then, we humbly request your patience and continued love," it added.

Similar statements have also been released by distributors in Malaysia, Europe, and the US.

The whole issue started back in mid-December, when the CBFC suggested on cuts and assured the producers that the film will be granted a U/A certificate. After the changes were made, communications were delayed due to Christmas holiday and the New Year, only for the Censorship Board to then send the film to the Revising Committee on the grounds of "religious sentiments" and the portrayal of defence forces.

Following several delays from the responsible parties, the producers filed a petition with the Madras High Court on 6 January to seek a directive. Following a hearing on 7 January, the court revealed that the decision will likely be pronounced on 9 January, which is supposed to be the day of the release.

This prompted the producers to release a statement delaying the release while awaiting judgment.
