From Third Largest to Gone: The MBO Story

2003 - Founded as MCAT Box Office Sdn Bhd on 18 December 2003, with its first cineplex opening in 2005.

2012 - Private equity firm Navis Capital Partners invested heavily into the chain, triggering a period of aggressive expansion. MBO subsequently acquired Big Cinemas, forming a larger entity and cementing its position as a major player in the Malaysian cinema market.

By 2018 - MBO had grown to 27 complexes across 10 states, making it Malaysia's third-largest cinema operator behind GSC and TGV, with total assets of approximately RM197.76 million. The chain had reportedly received attractive acquisition offers but valuations plunged when the pandemic hit.

14 October 2020 - With cinemas shuttered under Malaysia's Movement Control Orders and revenue collapsing - a 55% drop in the first three months of the outbreak followed by zero sales during MCO - the board of MCAT Box Office Sdn Bhd passed resolutions placing the company into creditors' voluntary liquidation.

February - September 2021 - GSC, a subsidiary of PPB Group Bhd, signed an asset sale agreement to acquire the majority of MBO's cinema assets. The deal was completed in September 2021 with GSC absorbing 18 of MBO's locations, pushing its market share past 50%.

29 December 2021 - The remaining MBO outlets were taken over by new local investors who relaunched the brand, starting with MBO Atria Shopping Gallery. The new management stated: "Our aspiration is to maintain the brand's voice and bring entertainment nearer to you."

17 June 2022 - MBO Quayside Mall opened as the chain's last new location, bringing the revived MBO network to 9 outlets nationwide.

20 June 2024 - MBO Atria Shopping Gallery, the flagship location of the 2021 comeback, closed permanently - nine days earlier than its announced closure date of 30 June 2024, citing unforeseen technical issues. The location that had symbolised MBO's revival was the first of the relaunched outlets to go dark, leaving the chain with 8 locations.

10 March 2026 - MBO Cinemas confirms permanent closure. The comeback lasted fewer than five years.

The MBO name, once a fixture in Malaysian malls for nearly two decades, is now gone for good.

Cinema Online Malaysia wishes all affected MBO staff and crew all the best in their next chapter.
