"Scary Movie 6" is a no-show for Malaysian audiences

9 Jun - It looks like there is still a market for parody movies, as the sixth instalment of the "Scary Movie" franchise landed at the top of the box office in its debut.

The movie was revealed to have made an estimated USD 55 million in the US, followed by an international haul of USD 50.5 million from more than 50 territories. It has now earned a global cume of USD 105.5 million.

The movie sees the return of the original stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall as Cindy and Brenda, with the Wayan Brothers (Marlon and Shawn) reprising their roles as Shorty and Ray.

"Scary Movie" has been screening in Singapore since 4 June, but it is officially banned in Malaysia by the Film Censorship Board (LPF). It ruled that the film failed to meet local screening requirements. The board flagged the film's heavy 18SX content and explicit parody humour as grounds for rejection.

In second place is another debut, "Masters of the Universe," which made USD 54 million globally. The movie stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, and co-stars Jared Leto as Skeletor and Camila Mendes as Teela.

On the other hand, A24's "Backrooms," which was made with a budget of USD 10 million, has now made USD 212 million in its second weekend.
