Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who finds that being an adult is not what she was cut out to be. She decides to return to her small hometown in Minnesota to relive her glory days and amend her past regret, which was breaking up with her high school sweetheart, Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson). However, when Buddy turns out to be happily married with kids, Mavis finds that her prodigal return home is proving to be more difficult than she thought. Mavis soon forms an unusual bond with a former classmate, Patton Oswalt (Matt Freehauf), who hasn`t quite gotten over high school, either.
