Stephen Fung directs this Chinese steampunk martial arts blockbuster about the early years of Tai chi master Yang Luchan, the man who founded in the 19th century what has now become the most popular Tai Chi style in the world. In this first film of the "Tai Chi" trilogy, a gifted child with a fleshy growth on his forehead travels far to learn Tai Chi but finds out the hard way that it is forbidden for a villager to teach an outsider when the villagers, from strong men to old women to little children, repeatedly challenge him to a series of fights, all of which he loses quite badly. But when a frightening army of steampunk soldiers bearing strange machines shows up, the villagers realize that in order to save their home, they must trust this strange outsider with the knowledge of Tai Chi.
Filem blockbuster Cina yang mengenai seni mempertahankan diri ini diarahkan oleh Stephen Fung. Ianya mengisahkan zaman awal guru Tai Chi bernama Yang Luchan, iaitu lelaki pertama yang menjumpai seni yang bermula dari abad ke-19 yang kini menjadi gaya Tai Chi yang terkenal di dunia. Dalam filem trilogy "Tai Chi" yang pertama ini, seorang pemuda berbakat yang mempunyai ketumbuhan di dahinya merantau jauh untuk mempelajari Tai Chi tetapi mendapat tahu bahawa orang kampung tidak dibenarkan mengajar orang luar akan seni tersebut apabila mereka semua seringkali mencabar dirinya untuk berlawan, yang mana pemuda itu sering kalah dengan teruk. Apabila sekumpulan askar yang digeruni muncul bersama mesin aneh, orang kampung mula menyedari bahawa demi menyelamatkan diri mereka, mereka perlu memperturunkan seni Tai Chi ke atas orang luar itu.
