Taking place on the Earth-like world of Eos, and happening in parallel to the opening events of Final Fantasy XV, the magical kingdom of Lucis is home to a magical crystal which holds great power, but the menacing empire Niflheim will do anything it can to make it theirs. Ongoing war happens between the two countries, but Lucis is protected by the Kingsglaive, an elite unit wielding the royal family`s magical power - under the command of King Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII. To save his kingdom, King Regis accepts terms of peace with Niflheim where he must cede all lands outside the crown city, and see his son, Prince Noctis, wed to Lady Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae now captive of Niflheim.

Berlatarkan dunia seperti Bumi bernama Eos yang mana ia telah dibahagi kepada beberapa negara yang pernah mempunyai Kristal ajaib; sekarang hanya negara Lucis sahaja mempunyai Kristal tersebut. Dinasti Caelum menggunakannya untuk mempertahankan diri mereka daripada penceroboh menerusi tembok magik. Dalam beberapa tahun, sebuah empayar maju, Niflheim, telah menawan negara-negara lain dan kini sedang berperang dengan Lucis. Dalam perang ini, Lucis dilindungi oleh unit elit Kingsglaive dengan kuasa magik yang kuat. Raja Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII kemudian menerima syarat-syarat perdamaian dengan Niflheim.
