Based on true historical events, the movie is set in early 1930s Soviet Ukraine. Yuri, a young artist born into a Ukrainian Cossack family, struggles to save his childhood sweetheart Natalka during the Holodomor, the man-made genocidal famine engineered by Joseph Stalin that killed millions of Ukrainians.
