Following the controversy surrounding his movie "L`Age d`Or", Luis Buñuel is unable to continue with his next project, a documentary on Las Hurdes, one of the poorest regions in Spain. His friend, sculptor Ramon Acin, then promises to fund it if he wins the lottery. Amazingly, Acin wins and he keeps promise, giving Bunuel his winnings to fund the movie.

Salvador Dalí dan Luis Buñuel merupakan figura utama dalam gerakan Surealis di Paris pada tahun 1930. Masalah kewangan yang dihadapi Buñuel susulan skandal filemnya, "The Golden Age", menyebabkan projek dokumentarinya tentang Las Hurdes, iaitu salah satu kawasan paling miskin di Sepanyol, tergendala. Namun nasib menyebelahinya selepas rakan baiknya, Ramón Acín yang juga seorang pengukir, berjanji akan menanggung kos pembikinan filem dokumentarinya, jika dia memenangi nombor ekor. Tanpa disangka, Acín menang dan dia kemudian menunaikan janjinya kepada Buñuel.
