10-year-old Sam and his family`s summer vacation in Terschelling isn`t going very well, especially since his brother has a broken leg. Being the youngest in his family, Sam fears being left alone, thus he decides to use this holiday as his "aloneness training" and detaches himself from his family. His plan is derailed when he meets 11-year-old Tess, a strange girl whose secret makes Sam realise the importance of family.

Berdasarkan novel nukilan Anna Woltz yang sama judulnya, filem ini menceritakan kisah Sam, seorang budak lelaki berusia 10 tahun, dan keluarganya yang pergi bercuti di pulau Terschelling, Belanda, pada musim panas. Namun, apabila keluarganya berdepan masalah tersendiri, Sam nekad untuk pergi melatih dirinya untuk mengembara secara berseorangan. Sam akhirnya bertemu dan mula berkawan dengan seorang gadis pelik bernama Tess. Biarpun baru sahaja berkenalan, Tess nekad meminta bantuan Sam untuk mencari bapa kandungnya. Walaupun terpaksa, Sam akhirnya bersetuju untuk membantu gadis itu dan dia mula menyedari bahawa pentingnya hidup berkeluarga.
