This documentary film uses footage from various archives in Japan and the Netherlands. It tells the story of Alima, an Indonesian woman who works as a babu or nanny to a Dutch family during World War II. She accompanies the family during a short stay in the Netherlands, taking care of the baby, before returning to Indonesia, where she lives through the Japanese occupation. She falls in love with an independence fighter, Riboet, but at the same time, she remains dedicated to the child under her care.

Filem dokumentari ini mengisahkan wanita-wanita orang asli Indonesia yang bekerja sebagai pembantu, atau babu, kepada penjajah Belanda ketika berlakunya Perang Dunia Kedua. Gara-gara ingin melarikan diri dari perkahwinan yang dirancang oleh keluarganya, Alima bersetuju untuk menjadi pembantu kepada sebuah keluarga di Belanda. Namun apabila dia pulang ke Indonesia, negaranya telah pun dijajah oleh Jepun dan sedang berperang untuk mencapai kemerdekaan. Dalam pada dia setia menjaga anak keluarga itu selama bertahun-tahun, kesetiaannya terhadap kekasihnya yang juga pejuang kemerdekaan, Riboet, kekal utuh. Filem ini dicerita menggunakan rakaman-rakaman video arkib.
