SENARIO XX

Zoragon is from the planet Saturn. He`s in charge of handling the spaceship that carries energy sources from Venus to Mars. One day, his spaceship is attacked by General Zoragas and his sidekick, Zolidia. The General and his helper want the power machine that Zoragon keeps because it can be turned into a weapon and the General wants it to dethrone King Zaragus. As a result of the attack, Zoragon is forced to land on Earth and finds himself in a village in Malaysia. The villagers are shocked with the arrival of the spaceship or UFO. In the midst of the chaos, a `bomoh`, (medicine man) who stills keeps traditional beliefs, tell the villagers that the spaceship and the aliens are ghosts, so he uses a curse to rid the spirits. Zoragon`s arrival on Earth also leads him to meet with a girl named Siti. As a result, conflict arises between Siti`s fiancée and Zoragon, who falls for Siti.

This movie is a living definition of a campy B-grade sci-fi movie that was just trying too hard. It was trying too hard to be an out-of-this-world sci-fi movie, trying too hard to have melodrama in it and most of all, trying too hard to be funny. A disappointment, especially coming from Aziz who had previously given us the still memorable "XX Ray". I don't get it, how did something so promising turn out to be so... stale?

Story wise, 'Zoragon', an alien, has been sent on a mission to safely transport an energy container back from Venus to Mars, but a run-in with evil 'Zoragas' and his side kick 'Zolidia' caused him to crash land on earth. Zoragon, Zoragas and Zolidia?? Just saying the names together have already caused me to forget who's who. I still don't get the reason behind the choice of these names. Far from funny, they just sound cliché really.

I won't touch on the special effects because to compare it with other movies would be unfair. We're not talking Hollywood here, so for this movie, I thought the special effects were passable. Though, of course, the last time I saw an alien animation like this was in those 60s - 70s TV shows that you watch when you have absolutely nothing better to do. The opening sequence of the movie especially, reminded me of "Mars Attacks".

As for the comedic timing of the movie, it's strictly for Senario fans really. I was never a big follower of their show nor am I really fond of their jokes but sometimes I did find myself laughing out loud from the absurdness of it all. For me, Azlee's character, Wak Kernal, was a bit too much and some parts of the movie had me wishing he wasn't there.

Saiful and Wahid did a good job as the aliens, and I give two thumbs up to Saiful. His jokes, at least, are not as repetitive as the rest of the crew and man, that long white hair? Pantene eat your heart out. At the end of the day, this is one of those movies that kids will definitely enjoy. As for adults, unless you're a Senario fan and can take their crude slapstick humour, then I won't suggest it. Not that this movie is totally 'un-watch-able'. I still managed to stomach it but it does leave a really bad after-taste.

Considering it's releasing on the same date as "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of the Sith", all I can say is 'good luck at the box office'. They're going to need it.
