Watch this if you liked: "Air Mata Duyung", "Little Mermaid", "Laal Paree"

A brand new mermaid is back on our screens with another attraction that brings fantasy to the local industry. The film, which is the second product of KRU Films after the huge success of "Cicak-Man", is set to mark its place in the heart of local movie fans. "Duyung" also features our very own well-loved comedian, Saiful Apek (Jimmy) pairing with Maya Karin in this hilarious love story.

True to the cliche of Razak's films, "Duyung" offers not much improvement from his previous films. Admittedly, the movie is narrated in an eye-catching way but the concept of "Duyung" itself is not new as there was a Hindi movie back in the 90's, "Laal Paree", which starred Aditya Pancholi and basically dealt with the same idea - a romantic relationship between a human being and a mermaid. Nevertheless, Razak's approach in "Duyung" departs from that in the Hindi flick, and thus deserves the attention of viewers as he manages to come up with something fresh. It is sufficient enough to give a different colour to local films indeed.

It starts well with a good introduction to the story, and Saiful Apek is obviously in his element. Although the dialogue throughout the movie is quite silly, it is undeniably funny at the same time. Maya's acting is pretty much the same-old, same-old - nothing close to mesmerising. It's just more mediocre acting and safe play by Maya. However, considering the storyline, this movie doesn't really demand much in the way of performance from Maya. So what she gave in "Duyung" was probably just right. Her gorgeous smile is enough for the audience to drift away each time she appears onscreen.

The rest of the cast displayed average acting, which for me supports the plot just fine. Raja Noor Baizura, once the Best Actress for her role in "Oh Fatimah" in 1989 did a pretty good job in "Duyung". Playing Onah, the mother of Jimmy, she portrays quite an affectionate mother and this really suits her. Our talented player Abu Bakar Omar who plays Pak Keoi, the father of Jimmy, handled the role well too. Yassin as Orix, the apeman who is Jimmy's friend, doesn't do anything but fool himself by repeating the line "Fuyoh!" throughout the movie. Yasmin Hani who plays Aspalela shows some of improvement in her performance as compared to her acting in "Cicak-Man" and "Bilut".

The most pathetic part of "Duyung" for me was the final 15 minutes, which really ruined the momentum of the movie. I never expected "Duyung" to be summed up with such a conclusion. It makes me wonder what was in Razak's head when he reviewed the movie prior to its general screening. It is unforgivable that he gave the story such a ridiculous ending. However, recognition should be given to KRU for their creativity in composing a good musical score for this movie.

Apart from its poor ending, "Duyung" is actually a good watch for those who need something to do to fill their time. The message that it delivers (preserve the environment) is a good reminder to us all.
