Watch this if you liked: “Wushu,” “Once Upon A Time In China”

With the opening of "Kinta", it's about time Malaysia showed the world its true colours and what we are capable of producing!

Winding back the clock, "Kinta" is about a group of Chinese immigrants who came all the way from China to then Malaya, hoping the new land will bring them better lives. However, things are never as simple as that, are they?

Like most martial arts films, "Kinta" is a showcase of how realistic the stuff can be on film. What's even more exciting is that the film features local talents like Malaysia's wushu opponents Robin Ho, David Bao, Michael Chin and Shawn Lee. Now, who says athletes can't be actors? These guys are among the best of the best, with genuine body contact, real pain and of course, real passion. Much of it is revealed at the end credits so make sure to stay put for that!

Here's the surprising bit. All of the action sequences are choreographed and supervised by Hong Kong actor-stuntman Chin Kar Lok. What's more surprising is that long time action star Mark Cheng makes a special appearance, and boy what a grande entrande this man prefers!

In terms of story, "Kinta" can be better. Unnecessary flashbacks and shrieking expressions can be deleted, paying more due to character development. The action, however is simply awesome!

The director of photography does an excellent job in bringing Perak and parts of Ipoh into life. Beautiful sunsets in the high peaks of Perak's hills, early 19th century tin mining town's rustic charms, you name it. Jacky Tang is the master. Watching the master at work is like watching still images come to life. On the other hand, the cinematography isn't something new. In fact, like most Malaysian filmmakers, CL Hor prefers the usual contemporary shots, although it is noticeable that he can definitely shoot an impressive film, being able to capture every movement so crystal clear.

So what happens to the bad guys like Patrick Teoh and his koncos? Well, you have to watch it to find out!
