22 Dec – Kulim folks rejoice as the introduction of a new cinema in town last month meant no more long trips to Penang and other faraway areas to catch the latest blockbusters.
The first cineplex in Kulim, Kedah opened for business on 27 November 2009 at Landmark Central Shopping Centre in Taman Resak. This new BIG Cinemas Lotus Five Star outlet is the largest cinema in Kedah with six screens (1,000 seater) and combined with their other 4-screen in Alor Star Mall makes the chain the largest exhibitor in the state with a total of 10 screens and a 1,725 seating capacity. Speaking at the grand opening last week on 15 December 2009, BIG Cinemas Lotus Five Star chief operating officer Preetham Rebello said it was an honour for the company to present a fine cinematic experience for movie goers in Kulim. "The development of Kulim has been remarkable. With the opening of the multiplex, we aim to provide a world class movie going experience to our audiences,"
BIG Cinemas Lotus Five Star is a joint venture between Reliance Media Works Ltd (a member of the Reliance ADA Group) and Malaysia's Lotus Five Star group. Reliance Media Works CEO Anil Arjun said there was considerable untapped potential in Malaysia in terms of providing a grand cinema experience. "We see an opportunity in bringing the brand and its fine cinematic experience to territories that are lacking in entertainment infrastructure." "We are happy to note the keen enthusiasm for the cinema in the neighbourhood," he said, adding that it now has 500 screens worldwide. BIG Cinemas Lotus Five Star began its operations in Malaysia in November last year. They now have 15 cinemas with a total of 72 screens in six states. It is the third largest cinema chain in Malaysia. More pictures from this event are available at the Cinnamon's Diary section and also on Cinnamon The Lion's Facebook photo albums.
