10 Feb – "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" takes first place on the U.S. weekend box office chart for 5 to 8 February, but in Malaysia and Singapore, "Jupiter Ascending" takes the top honour. "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water", the sequel to 2004's animated movie featuring a talking sponge with square pants, wipes out the competitions as it soaks up USD55.3 million on its opening weekend. "American Sniper" ends its top spot reign, placing second with a weekend gross of USD23.2 million. "Jupiter Ascending" places third but only manages to collect USD18.3 million against its big budget of USD175 million.
Over in Malaysia, three new releases dethroned last week's top three movies. "Jupiter Ascending" ascends to number one on its opening weekend, while Tamil movie "Yennai Arindhaal" opens at number two. Angelina Jolie-helmed "Unbroken" settles for number three. Meanwhile in Singapore, also newly released "Jupiter Ascending" secures the top spot. Opening at number two on the chart is "Unbroken". Last week's number one, "American Sniper", slides down two spots to number three. In Malaysia, new movies that opened last weekend are "Bangunan", "My Mr. Right", "The Imitation Game", "Lemon Tree Passage", "Shamitabh", "Boyhood", "Eh Janam Tumhare Lekhe" and "Still Alice". Other movies that also opened in Singapore last weekend are "Shamitabh", "Meet Miss Anxiety", "A Most Violent Year", "Still Alice", "Wild", "Yennai Arindhaal" and "Hawaizaada".
