Video game movie adaptations

Writer: Low Yuen Yim

Fans of the following video games like Prince Of Persia, Tekken, Hitman and Resident Evil will be exhilarated to know that these have been adapted into feature films!

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time

Jake Gyllenhaal dons the role as Prince Dastan.
For those who are unfamiliar with the video game franchise created by Jordan Mechner, "Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time" might resemble "Aladdin" plot wise. According to Mechner, who serves as one of the scriptwriters for the film, "Rather than doing a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new video game, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story." Mechner previously considered producing an animated film based on the games, but could not resist Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer's offer. Apparently, this is the first of a seven film series. Let's hope Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton will be reprising their roles for the rest of the films. Click HERE for behind-the-scenes pictures.

TEKKEN

Jon Foo takes on the role as Jin Kazama.

Tekken also known as 'Iron Fist' is a series of fighting games that was originally an arcade game that spanned into Playstation, Xbox 360 and Game Boy versions. The game documents the events of the fictional martial arts tournament and it's one of the earliest 3D fighting game franchises.

"Tekken" the martial arts film on the other hand, portrays a young man who attempts to enter the Iron Fist Tournament in order to avenge the loss of his mother. "Tekken" is not the first movie adaptation of the video game as a Japanese animated adaptation entitled "Tekken: The Motion Picture" loosely based on Tekken 2 was produced in 1998.

King Of Fighters

Character transition from game to feature film.

The King Of Fighters (KOF) is somewhat similar with Street Fighter with numerous characters. The first game in the series, The King Of Fighters '94 was released in 25 August 1994. In the 90's, The King Of Fighters '94 was the most well known fighting game which continues to be a remarkable best seller in the fighting game genre, according to the KOF official website.

This year marks the 16th year of KOF with the release of its live action feature. Maggie Q and Bernice Liu are on board portraying some of the female fighters, Mai Shiranui and Vice respectively.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

(L-R) Ali Larter (Claire Redfield), Wentworth Miller (Chris Redfield) and Milla Jovovich (Alice)

"Resident Evil: Afterlife" is the fourth instalment of the Resident Evil franchise with Milla Jovovich returning as Alice to continue her battle with the Undead. Non-gamers would most likely be unaware that Alice is a fictional character and primary heroine created specially for the "Resident Evil" movie franchise. This time, Wentworth-Miller (Prison Break) as Chris Redfield joins her in the deadly battle with Umbrella Corporation. Chris Redfield's character first appeared in the first Resident Evil game as one of the main protagonists.

Shawn Roberts as Albert Wesker

After a cameo appearance in the last film, fans are anticipating Albert Wesker played by Shawn Roberts ("Edge Of Darkness") in "Resident Evil: Afterlife". He is a power hungry, intelligent and cunning man who sought for power over the entire human race for his own gain.

Touted as the first 3D live-action movie based on a video game, "Resident Evil: Afterlife" should be a must watch this year!

Hitman

Hitman is a stealth game series about Agent 47 who is an assassin for hire. This video game has expanded into novels and a film adaptation with the same name in 2007. The sequel "Hitman 2" is now on board with Spanish director Daniel Benmayor ("Paintball") and writer Daniel Casey, according to The Hollywood Reporter. At the moment, it is yet to be confirmed that Timothy Olyphant will return as Agent 47 in "Hitman 2".

Can Vin Diesel cut it as Hitman?

With rumours going around that Timothy might not be returning, fans of the movie and video game seem to be finding their own choice of replacement and one of them being Vin Diesel. He would definitely look the part of the genetically engineered assassin with the muscles and baldhead. The film will contain story elements from Hitman 5, the upcoming Eidos video game that will be released in late 2010.
