Movies Not to Miss: March 2016

Which of these are you going to watch?

Now with the Oscar season over, we can safely say that we are done with 2015. Well, not quite.

While March is when we can truly start to see what 2016 has to offer, there are still releases being brought over from last year.

Superhero movies are still going to be the main event this March, but if that somehow doesn't tickle your fancy, then maybe the comedies, action and horror that are on offer may do the trick.

Here are the movies not to miss this March!

Zoolander 2

Ten years after putting Mugatu behind bars, Derek Zoolander has almost retired from the fashion world to be a family man and a father to a teenage son. When his old partner and rival, Hansel, comes to re-invent Zoolander to save the world, the duo are back to save the world's celebrities from the evils of a freed Mugatu.

Famously banned in Malaysia, it seems the sequel has been given the thumb of approval from the Censorship Board as long as the only one getting assassinated is Justin Bieber (as seen in trailer). "Zoolander 2" is one of those trashy movies made for the Razzie's, but the overload of celebrity cameos from Olivia Munn, Susan Sarandon, Demi Lovato to Ariana Grande, is precisely the reason why we are going to watch it.

Her Own Address

After living all her life being dictated by her father, husband, brother and son, Sutopa finds herself on a train to an unknown destination, after having lost everything. There, she reflects on her life journey so far, and what she should do about her uncertain future.

Labourers are not the only ones we will be bringing in to Malaysia from Bangladesh, but this rare glimpse into their social structure. "Her Own Address" is a Bangladeshi film from debuting director and screenwriter Proshoon Rahman who wants the capture the hardships of women in the South Asia region where women are still subjected to traditional patriarchy for religious and cultural reasons, but to also be a source of empowerment.

It's The Moment Yang Arif

When two highly educated and high-ranking individuals, Daniel and Jinna, are embroiled in a rape case that becomes a national scandal, their case is brought to the courts where Daniel disputes for his innocence against Jinna's persecution.

This is the first legal thrillers we have seen in Malaysia, and given the many strange and controversial cases our courts have presided, we are really surprised how we have not thought that someone would make this sooner. Although "It's the Moment Yang Arif" hasn't got the production value that it deserves, but we really want to give a chance to S.T Bala and his crew to open up a new genre for Malaysian filmmakers to explore and expand on, because the legal system is one that more Malaysians need to know how it works.

Kung Fu Panda 3

After being passed with the title of Teacher, Po is asked by Master Shifu to go on a journey to truly discover himself until he meets with his real father, Li Shan. Just as Po tries to fit in with his ancestral home in Panda Village, the spirit warrior and collector Kai emerges from the Spirit Realm to depose Po and rule over China.

This is the first output from the collaboration of DreamWorks Animation and Oriental DreamWorks in China, but that hasn't affected the quality storytelling of humour and action that the series has been known for. Other than reuniting the all-star cast, starring Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Dustin Hoffman and Seth Rogen, the series has added big and familiar names such as Bryan Cranston as Po's father, Kate Hudson as the new love interest, and J.K. Simmons as the menacing voice of Kai. All we can say is that we are excited to stop the chitchat and see this dish of justice served.

General Release Date: 10 March

When recently divorced Maura is informed by her parents that they have sold their childhood home, she and her sister Kate, are asked to move out their belongings from their rooms before the buyers move in. Furious and unwilling to let go of the memories that was kept in their childhood home, Kate and Maura plan one last party at the empty house, for a blasting sendoff.

Following after "Pitch Perfect", director James Moore has shown that he knows how to work a lady cast to make what could have been just a normal acapella story, into a series with some of the most memorable acapella-pitches. Now he gets to work with the biggest names of female comedy, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and the result should be no less explosive. This is going to be a rough coming-of-age for women, but even girls need to have fun too!

The Divergent Series: Allegiant

After finding the shocking truth behind the faction system that controls their city, Tris and Four are led to leave their city for the first time, only to find a darker truth of the walls that protects it.

After "The Hunger Games", another young adult series has reached its final leg. And just like its young adult predecessors, "The Divergent Series" has decided to split its adaptation of the final book in the trilogy to a two-parter. Titled fully "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" instead of its book title, this will the first part to the concluding book by Vernoica Roth, that will have Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Jeff Daniels, Octavia Spencer, Miles Teller and Jeff Daniels reprising their roles in this final arc. "Insurgent" director Robert Schwentke is also back to bring the action, but this would be his last work for the "The Divergent Series", and won't be seeing it to the end in "The Divergent Series: Ascendant".

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

When militants attack the U.S. Special Mission embassy in Libya on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, the contracted security detail posted at a nearby outpost makes a decision to defend the ambassador. Expecting an imminent retaliation, the six-man team put up a last defense throughout the night.

March is sure satiating the needs of the manly audience, if they are looking for the one-man army against increasing odds in the long-delayed "London Has Fallen", or if they prefer to see their heroes walking away from a Michael Bay explosion. There most likely won't be men walking away from explosions in "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi", but the heroics here are real. Based on Mitchell Zuckoff's biographical story of the security detail which had to withstand an onslaught of militants after attempting to rescue the United State ambassador in the Libyan Special Mission, the tension and running gun battles are sure to catch fire, if we only have to indulge in a little jingoism.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

After the invasion of the Zod, Superman is revered as a saviour. But in the shadows and far corners of the world, there are some who may not find the idea of an alien capable of destroying the world left unmatched to be comfortable. As Clark Kent tries to find his role in his adopted home, heroes and villains may try to test whether Superman should be friend or foe.

The superhero movie genre couldn't ask for a better beginning for the year with the record-breaking reception that "Deadpool" received. Instead of trying to salvage any ill will if "Deadpool" turned out to be a disappointment, now "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" is in danger of becoming that disappointment. After a mixed start to their DC universe with "Man of Steel", it's up to the accelerated assembly of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman (and potentially so many others) to give it the proper opening to a new superhero cinematic universe. Still directed by Zack Synder, who hopefully has learned what worked and didn't in "Man of Steel", let's hope this is finally the dawn that does justice to the DC universe.

Eddie the Eagle

Since he was a child, Michael Edwards has always dreamed to be an Olympian. After deciding to be a ski jumper, Eddie meets a former ski jumper champion who takes him under his wing to make Edwards the first ski jumper to represent Great Britain in the 1989 Calgary Winter Olympics.

Based on the true story of Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie the Eagle, this is one inspiring underdog story of a man who doesn't win in the Olympics, but wins in life to achieve his dream. With breakout star Taron Egerton putting on some weight as the heavy Eddie, the real delight would be to see Hugh Jackman in the shouting mentor role; a fun role he has not played since "Real Steel".

10 Cloverfield Lane

Waking up in a reinforced and self-sustaining cellar after surviving an accident, a woman is told by her rescuer that she will be safe and should venture out to the world as it has been decimated by unknown forces.

Circulating as a spec script since 2012, the screenplay by John Campbell and Matt Stuecken eventually found a home with Paramount, and it quickly went under the lock and key of J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Production. Originally titled as "The Cellar", it was never seen or heard again until its first trailer was revealed with the release of "13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" and is now known as "10 Cloverfield Lane". Reportedly made with a mini-budget of US$5 million, it still managed to get a fairly strong cast of Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., but the biggest question remains as to the extent of its connection with Abram's "Cloverfield". And that is what we want to know enough to go and see it.

Mr. Right

When you have a cast made up of the hilarious Sam Rockwell ("Seven Psychopaths") and the equally as funny Anna Kendrick ("Pitch Perfect"), you know that this rom com is going to work out just right. Or is it? Well, maybe not for Martha (Kendrick) who plays a girl who seemingly falls for the perfect guy, aka. Mr. Right a.k.a. Francis (Rockwell), until he turns out to actually be a hitman!

Throw in an innocent girl who fantasies of romance, a charming but dangerous hitman, and a crime syndicate set in New Jersey, this is definitely the 'right' winning formula for both the gents and ladies to watch.
