"Cuci" comes surprise second in weekend box office standings

"Yeah, we almost beat Rambo!"

29 Jan – Hans Isaac's first film as a director, "Cuci", was the surprise hit of the weekend just gone when it took the number two spot behind United International Pictures' "John Rambo" in the local box office standings. The local comedy, starring Afdlin Shauki, Awie, AC Mizal and Hans Isaac himself, raked in RM1 million over the course of 5 days according to a source from the production house.

The debut of "John Rambo" at No.1 is hardly surprising, with a whopping 62 prints out on general release since its opening on 25 January 2008. The iconic franchise is expected to remain top for another week, unless "Meet The Spartans", which opens this week, pulls off an upset on the aged Stallone favourite.

The buzz surrounding monster movie "Cloverfield" was short-lived however, when it dropped to No.4 on the charts in only its second week of release, behind even Tim Burton's musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber On Fleet Street". This development is surprising, considering that "Cloverfield" hit cinemas nationwide with twice the number of prints compared to "Sweeney"; and also that although both opened on the same day, "Sweeney" had already banked some sneak revenue one week in advance.
