8 Feb – Science fiction love story "Avatar" has lost to earthbound romance "Dear John" over the weekend at the United States box office (Jan 5-7). According to Box Office Mojo, Hollywood's fifth adaptation of a tearjerker Nicholas Sparks novel debuted with an estimated US$32.4 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada from Friday through Sunday. With onscreen couple Channing Tatum ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra") and Amanda Seyfriend ("Jennifer's Body") in the lead, Singaporeans will be able to catch this movie releasing on 25 February island-wide, while Malaysia is still yet to be known. With no new movies opening last week in Malaysia due to the upcoming Chinese New Year/Valentine's Day season this week, Tamil flick "Aasal" topped the box office over the weekend (Jan 4-7). However, do expect the film to topple over during the Lunar New Year weekend as cinemas nationwide will be making way new films opening this Thursday, which are "Valentine's Day", "True Legend", "All's Well End's Well Too 2010", "Wolfman", "72 Tenants Of Prosperity", "Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief", "14 Blades" and "Lu Pikirlah Sendiri". According to Cinema Online's poll result for "Which will you watch during CNY/Vday?", Eric Tsang's comedy "72 Tenants Of Prosperity" takes the lead with Anita Yuen, Bosco Wong, Charmaine Sheh, Eric Tsang and Jacky Cheung in the line-up.
