"The New Village" delayed

"The New Village" may receive the same treatment as "Tanda Putera".

29 Jul – The release of local Chinese movie "The New Village" on 22 August has been delayed until further notice as it is still awaiting further review by the Film Censorship Board (LPF).

A lot of controversy is broiling over the film, such as several complaints by social media bloggers and non-governmental organisations, as it is said to be promoting communism.

Awang Selamat of Mingguan Malaysia wrote, "Many of our security forces personnel were killed and maimed due to the communists, who are now recognised and glorified as heroes. Why does the producer of "The New Village" film want to re-write history?"

"The New Village" supposedly highlights the struggles of the Chinese communists, creating a controversy.
Due to the backlash the film received, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said "We have to postpone the premiere date pending another thorough look into the movie's plot."

He added, "The new release date will be decided once the second review is completed."

"The New Village" tells the story of a Hakka family and how they go about their daily lives after the British declared the state of emergency after a deadly clash between the British military administration and the Malayan Communist Party and beyond. The historical film is directed by Wong Kew-Lit and stars Lenna Lim and Kevin Soo in the leads.

This is not the first local historical film to receive such backlash. Director Shuhaimi Baba's film "Tanda Putera" also came under fire when it was screened for the media due to the movie's treatment of Chinese people in the racial May 13 riots.
