31 Jan – Stuart Beattie, a writer who tried out his directing chops for "I, Frankenstein" would be happy to know that his film achieved number 1 status in both Malaysia and Singapore's weekend box office for 24 to 26 January. "I, Frankenstein", which bombed in the U.S. and is critically disapproved, only made its way to 6th place in the U.S. weekend box office. The film lost to 5 other films including "Ride Along", "Lone Survivor", "The Nut Job", "Frozen" and "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit". It's a different story in Malaysia and Singapore, however, as "I, Frankenstein" beat out Chinese New Year film "Ah Beng: Mission Impossible" in Malaysia, and "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" in Singapore.
"Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit", "Lone Survivor" and "The Legend of Hercules" managed to take the third, fourth and fifth place in Malaysia's box office, while "The Wolf of Wall Street", "Devil's Due" and "The Legend of Hercules" took the same spots for Singapore. "The Legend of Hercules" is the origin story of the mythical Greek hero. Betrayed by his stepfather, the King, and exiled and sold into slavery because of a forbidden love, Hercules must use his formidable powers to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom. Other new movies that opened in Malaysia are "Laga" and "Jai Ho". Other new movies that opened in Singapore are "Dallas Buyers Club", "Two Moons", "Moon Indigo", "How I Live Now", "Justin Bieber's Believe" and "Jai Ho".
