"My Papa Rich" hits 2 million mark in five days

"My Papa Rich" rakes in the money.

24 Feb – Local Chinese movie "My Papa Rich" achieved quite an impressive feat on its opening weekend, placing fourth on Malaysia's box office chart for last weekend even while facing tough competition from Hollywood, Hong Kong and mainland Chinese productions.

Released in Malaysian cinemas on 19 February, the locally-produced movie has managed to surpass RM2.1 million in box office collection within its first five days of being shown in theatres.

Producer Aron Koh says to Cinema Online, "The movie performed well, spreading out from Northern Malaysia and now it is penetrating into Klang Valley and the southern states."

"I think the movie is doing well because it manages to resonate and clicks well with the audience due to its local elements approach."

Helmed by Malaysian director Ryon Lee, "My Papa Rich" follows Wang Lei as a widower named Yang. When Yang realises that he cannot afford to celebrate the coming Chinese New Year, he takes up an offer by a long-time friend named Lin, who is now a millionaire, to become a millionaire himself for a month.

Singaporean filmmaker Jack Neo, whose latest movie "Ah Boys to Men 3: Frogmen" is making a big splash over in the Lion City, plays the character Lin.

"My Papa Rich" will also be released in Singapore and is slated to hit the big screen there this 26 February.
