1 Jun – Hailee Steinfeld is currently in negotiations to star in the first spinoff of Michael Bay's "Transformers" franchise.

According to Variety, Steinfeld might play the lead human character in "Bumblebee".

Bumblebee is the popular black and yellow Autobot in the "Transformers" series. A spinoff focused on him would be interesting to watch, since the character is known to not be able to speak properly, but that might just be what Steinfeld's character is for.

While plot details of the spinoff are still unknown, The Hollywood Reporter reports that the main human character, who might be played by Steinfeld, is a tomboy with an after school job as a mechanic.

In most teasers shown of the latest "Transformers" movie, "Transformers: The Last Knight", Bumblebee is always shown facing off against the former leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime.

The spinoff might take place after the events of "The Last Knight", where Bumblebee is wounded by Optimus Prime and meets a young human mechanic who can fix him up once more. The new character would be the third human to partner-up with Bumblebee, after Sam Witwicky and Cade Yeager.

The fan favourite bot of the "Transformers" franchise, Bumblebee is getting his own movie.

"Bumblebee" has already tapped Laika CEO Travis Knight – who previously directed the Oscar-nominated animation, "Kubo and the Two Strings" – to helm the project. Christina Hodson ("Shut In") wrote the script.

Paramount hopes that the movie will be the official start of a Transformers cinematic universe, with many more spinoffs, prequels and sequels to come.

Steinfeld debuted in the 2010 remake of "True Grit" and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She has been enjoying a singing career since she appeared in "Pitch Perfect 2" and has wrapped up the filming for "Pitch Perfect 3". Last year, she gained many award nominations for her performance in the teen drama, "The Edge of Seventeen".

"Bumblebee" is slated for a June 2018 release.

The next "Transformers" movie, "Transformers: The Last Knight" arrives in cinemas on 22 June while Steinfeld's next movie, "Pitch Perfect 3" opens near the end of this year on 21 December.
