"Shaft" sequel lands lead actor

Jessie T. Usher will play Samuel L. Jackson's son in the "Shaft" sequel.

21 Aug – "Shaft" is set to return with a sequel starring "Independence Day: Resurgence" actor Jessie T. Usher.

Meanwhile Samuel L. Jackson is currently in negotiations to reprise his role as the 2000 reboot's John Shaft, according to Deadline.

With Richard Roundtree also in talks to play the famously originated character in the 1971 classic, the new movie titled "Son of Shaft" is said to play up the generational angle with Samuel as Roundtree's nephew (as shown in the 2000's reboot) and Usher as Samuel's son.

The "Survivor Remorse" star will play an FBI cyber expert who has to partner up with his estranged father (Samuel Jackson), to solve a case. This will give rise to a new-meets-old dynamic, which will become one of the film's centrepieces.

Based on Ernest Tidyman's novel, the MGM's 1971 blaxploitation film, directed by Gordon Parks, tells the life of John Shaft who navigates mob neighbourhoods in New York City in search of a mobster's missing daughter.

To be helmed by "Ride Along" director Tim Story with a screenplay by "Black-ish" creator Kenya Barris, "Son of Shaft" is set to begin production this September.
