11 Apr – "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has now broken all 2023 opening record by accumulating USD 377 million in five days. This is based on the domestic taking of USD 204.6 million, with an addition to the international tally of USD 173 million from 70 markets, making it only the second biggest opening for an animated movie behind Pixar's "Incredibles 2". At the same time, the film currently has the best opening number for the year 2023, already surpassing "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" and the best opening for a movie based on a video game.
Among the reasons for its success is the fact that it is released on Easter weekend, with the movie attracting not only families with children but fans of the Nintendo game young and old. Meanwhile, Jack Black, who voiced the character Bowser in the film, recently stated that he has ideas for a sequel, including introducing the character Wario, the arch-rival of Mario. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Pedro Pascal is Wario," he said, suggesting "The Last of Us" star for the role.
