Jennifer Aniston as a mother... Now that's something we don't see very often! Although it is only on screen, she cuts a striking figure in "The Switch", a film about Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) who decides to have a baby against the wishes of her best friend, Wally (Jason Bateman). She enlists the help of a handsome and charming sperm donor, Roland (Patrick Wilson) but - as always! - something happens and Wally finds himself switching the 'specimen' of Roland with his (without Kassie's knowledge of course). Fast forward a few years later, Wally meets up with Kassie and her son Sebastian. Faced with a mini-version of himself, Wally is faced with the dilemma of informing Kassie and jeopardising their friendship.

For a film that is set (mostly) in fast-paced New York City, "The Switch" moves along rather leisurely. It shows good contrast though, especially in the second half, where there is good character development as we see Wally and Sebastian bond. The intimate scenes between father and son are delightful to watch. We're also reminded of this when Wally talks about the human 'race', which is a great metaphor. How often do we rush through our lives without taking time to slow down and enjoy it?

Likewise, don't expect to have full out jokes and gags a la "Grown Ups". The film spreads out the funniness quite a bit, but it still has some great laugh-out-loud moments. One that comes to mind is when Kassie throws an "I'm Getting Pregnant" party and she wants Wally to come (excuse the pun). The situation where Wally gets the invitation is hilarious!

Jennifer Aniston is delightful as Kassie. Shedding her infamous Rachel character in "Friends", she reigns in all the exaggeration and gave a good performance as a strong woman who dares to take chances in becoming a single mother and succeeds at it. Jason Bateman is also commendable as the neurotic Wally. The subtleties and quirks that he brought to the character shine through, and his chemistry with Anniston is great to watch. As the charming 'other guy', Patrick Wilson definitely plays it well. Still, the one person that will really melt your heart is Thomas Robinson, who plays Sebastian. Cute as a button and endearing in his weariness of the world, Robinson is certain to make you go "Awww" every time you see him on screen!

Give this a go if you're into romantic comedies that are not run-of-the-mill "Boy meets girl, girl hates boy but they fall in love in the end", or if you're a fan of Jennifer Aniston. It is a great alternative to the cliches and saccharine sweetness we often get bombarded with.
