Marlina is a grieving widow living alone in Sumba. One night, a man named Markus and his gang try to rob her house. She poisons them and beheads Markus. More trouble arises as she not only gets haunted by his headless spirit but the gang is now hunting her down to take back his head, as it is a Sumba belief that a burial cannot be held without an intact corpse.

The Good, the Bad and the Head of a Criminal:

• A film by Mouly Surya featuring extraordinary beautiful cinematography by Yunus Pasolang as their Director of Photography.

• The movie is filled with visually arresting shots, each filled with meaningful messages brought out without the help of dialogues or explanation of any sort.

• A stylised arthouse thriller film that highlights important messages about the region's gender politics.

• Despite following a gory theme, it's not presented with meaningless blood-bathing violence but rather with clean execution of actions that display a lesson of the survival of the fittest.

• The film mixes Indonesian culture with a Western-genre but instead of a cowboy, we have a widow seeking for revenge.

Trivia:

• The idea of the movie came from a story told by Garin Nugroho to director Mouly Surya when they were watching a screening for a movie they were judging.
