25 Jan – The official list of nominees for the 84th Academy Awards set to compete for the prestigious Oscars this 26 February 2012, was announced earlier today in U.S. at a special pre-launch ceremony hosted by actress Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Sherak, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Leading the nominations is Oscar-winner, Martin Scorsese's "Hugo", which is contending for best picture along with 10 other nominations. Hot in pursuit, is the silent French romance film, "The Artist", with 10 nominations. With films like the family drama "The Descendants", the 9/11 anecdote; "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close", "The Help"; a deep Southern drama, the fictional romance; "Midnight in Paris", the sports story "Moneyball", the family narrative; "The Tree of Life" and the "War Horse"; an epic tale of World War 1, it seems that "Hugo" might have quite a competition. First-time nominees includes Jonah Hill as best supporting actor for "Moneyball", Gary Oldman as best actor for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and Demian Bichir for "A Better Life." Michael Fassbender, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling and Charlize Theron failed to gain any nominations this year. Actress Meryl Streep collected her 17th nomination, for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."
