23 Dec – "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" wins the battle for movie supremacy as it made an impressive premiere last weekend, topping the weekend box office charts for 18 to 21 December 2014 in the U.S., Malaysia and Singapore. The final movie in the "Hobbit" trilogy collected USD54.7 million, but it was not the only new movie to rise above older ones during its opening weekend. "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" opened at number two with its USD17.1 million gross while "Annie" wins audiences' hearts and opens at number three with a collection of USD15.8 million. In Malaysia, "The Hobbit" pushes last week's winner down to first runner-up. With "Lingaa" occupying second place, newly opened "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" has to settle for third place.
Similarly in Singapore, "The Hobbit" conquers the top spot, forcing "Exodus: Gods and Kings" down one rung to number two. "Paddington" makes a steady climb and lands in the top three this week. Also opening in Malaysia last week are "Gangster Pay Day", "Ophilia", "Kasut Ku Kusut", "P.K.", "Pisaasu" and "The Golden Era". Meanwhile in Singapore, new movies that opened last week are "Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb", "P.K.", "Pisaasu", "Annie" and "Predestination".
