Looks like BTS is loving "Mulan" too, are you looking forward to these movies?

As cinemas across the globe gradually reopen, film studios and distributors are gaining more confidence in releasing their latest movies on the big screen, be it local or international titles.

Among the movies lined up for this September are long-awaited ones that have been delayed multiple times due to the pandemic, such as "Mulan" and "Unhinged", as well as fresh offerings including K-pop group BTS' "Break the Silence: The Movie" and "I WeirDo".

Listed below are the movies releasing in local cinemas this September. (Take note that while these dates remain valid at the time of writing, the current uncertainty surrounding movie releases means that some of the movies below could be rescheduled).

Though its release is not without controversies, this Guan Hu-helmed Chinese historical war drama film went on to make the biggest debut this year with its USD116 million opening weekend box office collection (including previews). Set in the late 1930s, it tells of the National Revolutionary Army guarding the Sihang Warehouse when Shanghai is invaded by the Imperial Japanese Army.

It's been a roller coaster ride when it comes to "Mulan's" release. There was even a moment when this live-action adaptation was completely pulled off the release schedule. Luckily, Disney decided to release it after all – on Disney+ or in cinemas where the streaming service isn't available. Niki Caro directs a cast made up of Crystal Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Gong Li, Jet Li, Jason Scott Lee and more.

While BTS fans (known as ARMY) won't be able to see the group live in concert this year, they can at least take solace in the fact that they will soon see the seven members on the big screen! The fourth BTS concert film "Break The Silence: The Movie" follows the idol group on their "Love Yourself: Speak Yourself" world tour that was held from May to October 2019.

Janelle Monáe stars in this horror thriller by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, both of whom wrote and directed the movie together. The singer stars as Veronica Henley, a successful author who realises she is trapped in a nightmarish reality and must find a way to escape before it's too late.

Previously slated for release in July, this Russell Crowe-starrer is now scheduled to open this September. It follows an unstable man who, after a confrontation with a divorced single mother at an intersection, begins stalking and tormenting her.

In this Timo Tjahjanto-helmed movie, sisters Alfie and Nara are trying to move on from a demonic terror that destroyed their family two years ago. Unfortunately for Alfie, even as she tries to lead a normal life, she continues being haunted by horrifying visions. To make matters worse, an evil entity is threatening her and her friends.

Rahila Ali directs this based on a true story. It tells of 19-year-old Aurora who grew up in Europe with her non-Muslim adoptive family. After finding out about her true identity, she travels to Malaysia to look for her biological parents. Ashraf Muslim, Wanna Ali, Fasha Sandha, Haris Ismail, Adam Corrie, and Fauziah Nawi lead the cast.

Set in a nursing home, newcomer Maya (Shandy Aulia) finds herself terrorised by a ghost that wanders the place dressed in a nurse uniform much like her own. She also encounters strange occurrences and is determined to find out the real cause behind the patients' mysterious deaths. This Indonesian horror is directed by Rudi Aryanto.

All the mask-wearing in this movie should resonate with the current audience. Chen Po-ching (Austin Lin Bo-hong) and Chen Ching (Nikki Hsieh Hsin-Ying) are not trying to break the COVID-19 chain though, they just happen to be two OCD and allergy sufferers who find each other in a world where people like them are usually seen as weirdos. It is the first feature film in Asia to be fully shot with an iPhone.

Led by Fattah Amin, "Miimaland" Also stars the likes of Sophia Albarakbah, Camelia Natasya kmn, Hazzy Alzeeq and Zalif Sidek. This local horror movie directed by Nevin Hiong revolves around the titular real-life abandoned theme park in Malaysia. Once a popular attraction from the '70s to the '90s, it was left deserted following a landslide.
