'Expendables' stands strong

23 Aug – "The Expendables" held on to first place for second weekend in a row at Malaysia box office (19-22 Aug), beating out six new releases – "City Under Siege", "Repo Men", "Adventure Of The King", "The Descent 2", "Slice", "Naan Mahaan Alla" - that were trying to overthrow the aging action stars.

Based on Cinema Online's 'Hot Movie Checks', "The Expendables" remained at the top for two weekends straight, followed by "City Under Siege", "The Last Airbender", "Adventure Of The King", and "The Descent 2". Currently a hot-seller in cinemas nationwide, the film also remained at the top spot in US over the weekend, defeating five newcomers - "Vampires Sucks", "Lottery Ticket", "Piranha 3D", "Nanny McPhee Returns", and "The Switch".

Twilight spoof "Vampires Suck" was the biggest grosser among the new releases, debuting in second, while Julia Robert's "Eat Pray Love" slipped to third position. The much hyped R-rated "Piranha 3D" on the other hand lands in sixth, garnering less than half of "Snakes On A Place" and "Lake Placid" among comparable titles, according to Box Office Mojo.

Meanwhile, it was a gathering of canines and felines at Tropicana City Mall yesterday as a Cats & Dogs Carnival took place in celebration of upcoming release "Cats And Dogs: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore". The full-day pet carnival was complete with activities such as 'Dogs in Disguise' Pets Costume Contest, 'Hunt for Kitty Galore' Scavenger Hunt Game, Pets Fashion Show, Pets Behaviour Workshop and talks by SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). The 3D comedy is slated to screen 2 September 2010.
