'Expendables' lead box office

16 Aug – "The Expendables" easily muscled its way to the top of Malaysia's weekend box office (12-15 Aug), punching last week's top movie "The Last Airbender" down to second place and "Salt" to third. "The Expendables" rode high at the box office with ease, opening alongside three other new releases – Wang Lee Hom's comedy "Love In Disguise", Hindi thriller "Help", and Tamil drama "Vamsam".

The action extravaganza, starring the who's-who of 1980s and 90s action stars - Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger and more – dominated the US weekend box office as well, earning an estimated US$35 million. Box Office Mojo reported that the film's opening weekend was a bit less than "Inglorious Basterds"'s US38.1 million, but was greater than "The A-Team"'s US$25.7 million and nearly doubled "Rambo"'s US$18.2 million. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Stallone said that he has the story to the sequel plotted out in his mind with the challenge of having new people introduced into the group and some others leaving.

Meanwhile, Julia Roberts's "Eat Pray Love" opened at No.2 with US$23.7 million, previous weekend's chart-topper "The Other Guys" fell to third place with US$18 million, "Inception" in fourth with US$11.4 million and opening in fifth was "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World", due late release in Malaysia on 11 November 2010.
