30 Aug – "Step Up 3" pop-and-locks in top position, knocking "The Expendables" off its two-week reign over the Malaysian weekend box office (26-29 Aug). Directed by former dancer John Chu, the third instalment to the successful "Step Up" franchise easily battled against 11 other new releases namely "Old Cow Vs Tender Grass", "Avatar: Special Edition", "Stool Pigeon", "Vampires Suck", "Phua Chu Kang The Movie", "Aftershock", and "Grown Ups".
According to Cinema Online's "Hot Movie Checks', "The Expendables" remained the top showtimes check on the site for three weeks straight, followed by "Step Up 3", "Phua Chu Kang The Movie", "City Under Siege", and "Avatar: Special Edition". Over in the United States, Box Office Mojo reports that documentary-style horror "The Last Exorcism" and crime action "Takers" starring Chris Brown, T.I. and Zoe Saldana were neck-and-neck for the weekend top spot, each delivering sizable debuts of an estimated US$21.3 million and US$21 million, respectively. Meanwhile, "Avatar" didn't quite blast off again with its Special Edition as it landed in twelfth position with an estimated US$4 million.
