8 Apr - Warner Bros. "A Minecraft Movie" is finally ending the box office winter as it breaks records with its opening number.

The film, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, opened in the US with USD 157 million, while also making USDD 144 million overseas to a global tune of USD 301 million.

This means that the film has now become the biggest opening number for a video game adaptation, surpassing "The Super Mario Bros" movie, which made USD 164.4 million when it opened in 2023.

It also became the first film to earn a huge domestic launch after "Deadpool & Wolverine" last year.

"We're absolutely overjoyed A Minecraft Movie has been so warmly received by audiences around the world," said Warner Bros. Chief Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca. "A Minecraft Movie's decade long journey to the screen was overseen with great care by WBP's Jesse Ehrman and his team, and we are thrilled their efforts have resulted in such a tremendous response."

Based on the Mojang Studios video game of the same name, the film revolves around four characters who are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.

The game itself is the best-selling video game of all time, with over 300 million copies sold and an estimated 174 million active monthly players in 2024.
