Malaysian Govt to provide cash rebate to local productions

8 Apr - The Malaysian government will provide a 30 percent cash rebate to local production companies in order to stimulate the creation of a more international-standard films by local filmmakers.

The Minister of Communications, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, said that the cash rebate is introduced under the Malaysia Film Incentive (FIMI), and explained, "We need to provide opportunities for local film companies by offering various structures of better and more solid assistance. If the budget spent on a film is RM7 million, God willing, RM1 million will be returned (to the producer)."

"This initiative is a way forward, where production companies will no longer only depend on funds from the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), but also through the openness and involvement of other companies," he added.

Fahmi shared as much at the premiere of the movie "Blood Brothers: Bara Naga" that was also attended by Chairman of FINAS, Datuk Hans Isaac; CEO of FINAS, Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib; Managing Director of Skop Productions, Datuk Yusof Haslam; and the cast members including Sharnaaz Ahmad, Syafiq Kyle, Shukri Yahaya, and Amelia Henderson.

Fahmi also urged production companies to create more works that are not only entertaining but also capable of achieving high box office revenue.

"We need to produce films that not only entertain but can also generate income... I am confident this can be done. To produce a good film, the foundation must have a solid script and a good director," he said.

Previously, it was reported that the government introduced FIMI with a 30 percent cash rebate on all Qualifying Malaysia Production Expenditures (QMPE) to provide additional financial incentives for the development of creative content specifically for film, television (TV), and screen productions.
