22 Jul – Another week has passed and the apes from "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" shows no signs of backing down from their throne as they once again claimed victory for the weekend box office chart from 17 to 20 July 2014 in Malaysia, Singapore and U.S. Although "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" managed to defend its throne, the film grossed over USD36.2 million, a fifty percent drop from the previous box office collection which is over USD72.6 million. Coming in second is the newly released horror-thriller film, "The Purge: Anarchy", the sequel to 2013 film, "The Purge" with a total gross of over USD29.8 million.
Also opened on its first week is the lovable Pixar's 3D animated film, "Planes: Fire & Rescue", a sequel to Disney 2013 "Planes" who came in third place with a weekend gross of over USD17.5 million. Moving on to Malaysia, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" remained on top of the weekend box office chart while the freshly released Tamil coming-of-age comedy-drama, "Velaiyilla Pattathari" took over the second place. In third place is the previous 1st runner-up, "Transformers: Age of Extinction". In Singapore, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" also proudly remained at the top spot of Singapore's weekend box office chart with "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and "Cursed House" coming in second and third place respectively. On the other hand, also opening in Malaysia last week are "The Fault In Our Stars", "The Anomaly", "The Lion Men: Ultimate Showdown", "Locke", "22 Jump Street" and "K: Missing Kings". Other new movies that opened in Singapore last week are "Hate Story 2", "Space Pirate Captain Harlock", "A Haunted House 2", "May We Chat", "Jersey Boys" and "Soul".
