5 Aug – The protectors of the Universe named the "Guardians of the Galaxy" has taken over the box office by nailing the first position in Malaysia, Singapore and U.S. in terms of box office collection with a strong opening in the early week of August, from 31 July to 3 August 2014. The new Marvel entry made its debut in North America with USD 94 million in its first week. Coming in at a very far second place is the French-English action film, "Lucy" starring Scarlet Johansson as the title character with a box office collection of USD 18.2 million.
American biographical drama film that tells the life of one of the founding fathers of funk music, James Brown, "Get On Up" came in at third place with a collection of USD 14.0 million in its opening week. Moving over to Malaysia, it is expected that the highly anticipated Marvel film about a group of alien oddballs, "Guardians of the Galaxy", also took over the weekend box office chart of Malaysia by getting first place. As for second place, the position goes to previous week's box office champion, Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules" with the third place going to the newly released dance film, "Step Up: All In", the fifth instalment of the "Step Up" film series. Similarly, "Guardians of the Galaxy" took over the weekend box office in Singapore as well, with the second and third place taken by "Hercules" and the supernatural film, "7500", respectively. Also opening in Malaysia last week were; "Jigarthanda", "The White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom", "Ju On 3: The Beginning of The End", and "The Teacher's Diary". Other new movies that opened in Singapore last week were; "Sarabham", "Jigarthanda", "7500", "The White Haired Witch", "Obsessed", "And So It Goes" and "Hong Hoon".
