21 Jul – Big heroes start small indeed. Marvel presents its tiniest superhero yet, who, last weekend, managed to open at number one at the U.S., Malaysia and Singapore weekend box office charts for 16 to 19 July 2015. "Marvel's Ant-Man" made USD57.2 million at the U.S. box office, according to Box Office Mojo stats, which means even though it placed first, it is also the second lowest-grossing debut of a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, right behind the USD55 million debut of 2008's "The Incredible Hulk". However, this is no big deal for the tiny superhero really as the movie was made on Marvel's smallest budget yet, costing only USD130 million. So far, the movie has made USD113.6 million worldwide. Slipping down to number two is "Minions" with its weekend gross of USD49.3 million. The successful spinoff of the "Despicable Me" movie series has to date raked in USD624.9 million worldwide against its USD74 million budget. Amy Schumer's R-rated comedy "Trainwreck" proves itself to be anything but as it debuted at number three with a weekend gross of USD30 million. It would have no problem making back its USD35 million production budget, not with Schumer, who is currently one of the top comediennes around, and Judd Apatow headlining the romcom.
"Marvel's Ant-Man" proves no hero is too small for the big screen as the movie also opened at number one in Malaysia. Trailing right behind is another new release, Tamil comedy "Maari", which has been receiving mixed reviews but still managed to open at number two. Previous chart-topper "Terminator Genisys" has been dethroned straight to number three. Singapore also saw "Marvel's Ant-Man" successfully stealing the number one spot last weekend. While "Minions" and "Terminator Genisys" swapped places with each other, with the little yellow henchmen climbing up a rung to land at number two, knocking the robot assassins down another spot to number three. New releases in Malaysia last weekend include "Ju-On 4: The Final Curse", "Prison On Fire 2015", "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", "Gangsterock: Kasi Sengat", "Doraemon The Movie: Nobita And The Space Heroes", "Suamiku Jatuh Dari Langit" and "The Road Within". Whereas in Singapore, other movies that also opened last weekend were "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", "Maari", "Welcome to New York", "I Am Somebody", "Foodies", "Max" and "Our Sister Mambo".
