The "Terminator" is back to conquer charts

The cyborg assassins are back in "Terminator Genisys".

7 Jul – "Terminator Genisys" may not have made that big a splash during its opening weekend in the U.S., but the sci-fi action movie still managed to land in the top three and even topped the weekend box office charts in Malaysia and Singapore for 2 to 5 July.

Though it was expected to kick off a new trilogy, especially with the return of the franchise's star Arnold Schwarzenegger, the fifth movie in the "Terminator" series opened to unexpectedly low reception, with critics lambasting it for lacking in terms of depth, visual aesthetics and development.

Unable to surpass the mega collection of highly-rated "Inside Out", which placed first last weekend in the U.S. with its gross of USD29.8 million, and "Jurassic World", which made another USD29.2 million and placed second, "Terminator Genisys" only opened at number three with USD27 million.

Though director Alan Taylor and the cast, including Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, Lee Byung-hun and more, probably aren't too devastated as the movie proves to be packing more punch abroad, having so far made a worldwide gross of USD127.97 million.

"Minions" are still spreading the happy virus in M'sia and S'pore.

"Terminator Genisys" even managed to finally dethrone the yellow, capsule-shaped stars of "Minions" in Malaysia last weekend. The newly-released action movie took first place while the animated movie slipped down to second place. This means the dinosaur movie, "Jurassic World", also moved down a spot and is now nestled comfortably at third place.

Similarly in Singapore, "Terminator Genisys" managed to protect its hold on the number one spot while new release, "Ted 2", opened at number two. "Minions" probably slipped on their favourite fruit's peel because last weekend the "Despicable Me" spinoff/prequel went down another spot to land in third.

Malaysia's new releases for last weekend include "Papanasam", "Vere Vazhi Ille", "Stung", "While We're Young", "Attack On Titan: Crimson Bow & Arrow", "Courage to Dream", "Palakkattu Madhavan" and "Guddu Rangeela".

Also opening in Singapore last weekend were "Loduku Pandi", "Guddu Rangeela", "Papanasam", "Palakkattu Madhavan", "Assassination Classroom", "SPL 2: A Time For Consequences", "Far From The Madding Crowd", "Dark Places" and "Paradise Lost".
