7 Sep - Good news to all you Malaysian cinephiles out there, the cinemas will be reopening soon! In a statement released by the Prime Minister Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, it was revealed that the government has decided to relax its pandemic restriction on the creative industry, including cinema theatres. "The condition to relax the restriction is subject to the SOP conditions that have been approved by the National Security Council, which include allowing only players, workers, and users who have been fully vaccinated as well as an approved capacity of the said premise," the statement read.
Back on 1 September, the Malaysian Association of Film Exhibitors (MAFE) made a plea to the government to consider allowing cinemas to resume operations to audiences who are fully vaccinated, stating that the industry was the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic despite having no cases stemming from the premises. More information will be released soon.
