7 Dec - Remember the grandma who went viral when she made the mistake of texting the wrong high school student instead of her grandson to attend her Thanksgiving dinner? Well, it was revealed that the grandmother, Wanda Dench and the young man, Jamal Hinton will now have their own movie to be made for Netflix called "The Thanksgiving Text".
The upcoming movie will be written by Abdul Williams, though no news as to who will be directing or playing the two leads in the project yet. In a joint statement, the pair said, "We are excited to share our story with the world. We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn't ordinarily make. We are so blessed to find a genuine friendship brought together by God from a mistaken text message."
The whole story (the real one, we mean) is this. Wanda Dench accidentally texted high school senior Jamal Hinton instead of her grandson to attend her Thanksgiving dinner at 3pm - all the way back in 2016. After a quick back and forth, Jamal explained that Grandma Wanda had texted to the wrong guy but jokingly asked if he can still "get a plate", to which Wanda responded, "Of course you can. That's what grandma's do... Feed everyone." After the story broke the internet, with Jamal attending the said Thanksgiving dinner, it was revealed that the pair kept up the annual ritual throughout the years, and became good friends in real life. Jamal reportedly was there for Grandma Wanda when her husband Lonnie Dench passed away from COVID-19, and his girlfriend soon started attending the dinner as well. Sobs... what a beautiful story.
