26 Apr - Veteran Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung has made history yet again by winning Best Supporting Actress at the 2021 Academy Awards.

The 73 year-old actress, who won for her role in "Minari", became the first Korean actor to win an Oscar in the show's 93-year history.

In her acceptance speech, Youn, who taught the audience how to properly pronounce her name, expressed, "Usually, when I'm living in the other part of the world, I just watch the television and there is the Oscar. But me, being here, myself. I cannot believe I'm here. OK, let me pull myself together."

Calling director Lee Isaac Chung her "captain", and thanked her "Minari" family, she later expressed disbelief that she had won over the likes of Glenn Close.

Glenn Close was not the only notable actresses that she bested at the awards, as Youn also defeated the likes of previous Oscar Best Actress winner Olivia Colman ("The Father"), and Amanda Seyfried ("Mank").

Nonetheless, her win was no surprise to anybody, as she had already bagged similar accolades at several other awards including the BAFTAs, where she hilariously thanked "very snobbish" British voters for the honour.

On the other hand, awards darling "Nomadland" emerged as a major winner of three categories, including Best Picture and Best Director for Chloe Zhao - who is the only second female director to have won the honour following Kathryn Bigelow in 2010. Its star Frances McDormand also won Best Actress for her role in the aforementioned film, while Best Actor went to Anthony Hopkins for the Alzheimer-themed "The Father".
